NEW DELHI – India on Wednesday reported a record 4,529 COVID-19 deaths over a one-day period, bringing its total fatalities from coronavirus infections to 283,248, the third most in the world after the United States and Brazil.

While India marked record deaths on Tuesday and Wednesday, daily cases have dropped below 300,000 for the third consecutive day, with 267,334 new cases reported Wednesday, according to the country’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

However, local media have termed the spike in fatalities as the world’s worst, pointing out that many people who had been infected in the second wave since April are hovering between life and death.

Amid still high numbers of infections, India continues to struggle with a shortage of hospital beds and medical oxygen.

India reported on Tuesday that its total coronavirus cases surpassed 25 million.

The country has recorded the second most infections, after the U.S. with over 32 million confirmed cases, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
